Looks at this base model 4 cylinder Mustang notch with a Landau top. There is no logical reason for this to exist, and yet it does.

This is clearly the car owned by somebody who previously owned a Mustang II Ghia. NTTAWWT

Or previously owned a true land yacht, but the kids moved out, and a smaller car just makes more sense. But I’ll burn in hell before I drive a Jap car.

This car is ripe for a 2.3L ecoboost swap.

It’s always a challenge to one’s own sollipsistic tendencies to see something that seemingly doesn’t make sense, but to know for a fact that to some other person at some time, it absolutely did.

There’s a lady I know of who owns a ‘57 Fairlane, but her primary car is a V6(?) SN 95. Probably not what I would have chosen and not that clear in relation to the other car other than FERD , but she clearly wanted them for different roles and likes them how they are, so...

I’m strangely okay with it. I like it..... good candidate for a 2.3 turbo swap.

It makes total sense when you go back in to the Mustang’s history. They were offered with options that ranged from  low powered, notch back, “sporty” economy cars to fire breathing big block monsters and everything in between. They should have called this the “Grande” model.

or “ La Grand”

Or had a big Thunderbird during the '79 oil crisis, and waited until it was paid off before trading on something smaller and more fuel efficient, in case that happened a third time.

Or “Le Grange”

It’s actually very similar to earlier Grande models:

Oh man, the memories. My grandma had a 4 cylinder/manual ‘84 Mustang Ghia notchback. Basically the s ame car with a foofy leather interior, unique paint & body color trim, and TRX wheels, sans the landau top. It was very nearly my first car. Her previous light blue Mustang II had a white landau top though.

HEY DON’T TALK ABOUT MY GRAMMIE LIKE THAT! ;) Because that’s basically her. Except it was an ‘84 Mustang Ghia 4cyl/manual that replaced a robin’s egg blue/white landau top Mustang II. And that, kids, is how I became a “Ford Guy.”

Incidentally, I need to send you pics of the new headliner in the galaxie. It’s not perfect, but it *is* dead sexy. I also have four yards of new seat cloth waiting for me to disembowel the seats to make use of...

a smaller car just makes more sense. But I’ll burn in hell before I drive a Jap car.

Lets be fair here: there weren’t that many fun small and small 4 seaters in 1982. Besides, the 2.3L Mustang was still a decently fun thing to drive, and had (slightly) more power than the Prelude or Corolla, and probably had more room in the back seat too.

Plus the 2.3L was a well established and reliable engine, and the rest of the driveline was pretty solid too.

Overall, a 2.3L Mustang probably wasn’t the most fun option for the price and requirements, but it wasn’t a dumb choice either.

Oh yes! I’m not around here enough to keep up, that’d be cool. Also incidentally, the roof of a good friend’s workhorse Falcon wagon is much rustier than we thought, so we’re thinking of ways to “deal” with it in the short term. Neither of us are gifted in metalwork or welding beyond rudimentary bending and sticking metal together , so more of a “keep the roof on and water out for now” solution is needed. We both hate Bondo. Have you used POR-15 putty at all?

I have not used POR-15 putty, but that might be a much better option for me to use on some door spots on the Galaxie than cutouts and reweld. Also, an area on my mom’s squarebody suburban. I totally forgot that existed. I will say, Bondo to close a hole is always a bad idea unless you can seal it completely on the back, and sometimes a bad idea even then. It’s porous, it permits moisture travel, it *will* fail. My Ranchero (in its roofline, even) was an object lesson in What Not To Do With Bondo.

Normal automotive f iberglass is better, but not great, because the resin has some long-term adhesion issues and doesn’t expand/contract at the same rate. The nice thing about something softer is while it won’t hold paint well, it’s more likely to stay.

Depending on the spot, you might try their glasscloth or a similar close-fiber cloth and liquid POR-15, because the putty might set up too hard to stay in a larger swiss-cheesed area.

Putty ought to be great for, say, a driprail area.

It’s the drip rails where the worst of it is, of course. So we’ll probably try the putty because fuck Bondo. The car is primered black anyway and is used as a commuter/truck so paint quality isn’t such a concern for now. Once it gets some grinding we’ll know more or less how deep it is. Probably very, where the liquid stuff would be used first.
